One of my greatest fears about entering the entrepreneurial world was how the heck to take time off. Well, your girl loves a vacation, so let me show you how to plan for your own vacation as a small business owner.
First, a good vacation should be planned ahead of time. Obviously, things come up and you may need to take time off unexpectedly. But when planning for a butt-in-the-sand and cocktail-in-your-hand kind of vacation, you’ll want to book it out in advance. This timeline will look different for every small business depending on how far out you are booking clients, but I recommend 6 months to a year.
Once your vacation dates are locked in, visit your calendar and shut off your availability during vacay time. The last thing you want is someone booking a discovery call in the middle of your Swedish massage, so make sure you do this early.
I personally use Honeybook to manage my appointments with clients and love the simplicity of setting my availability. If you want to give Honeybook a try you can use my link for 20% off!
I also use my Honeybook account to make sure everything is neatly tied up with all active clients well before vacation time begins. You can use any CRM system that works for you, but make sure you have a system to keep yourself organized. Vacation can’t begin until you have answered all client questions and wrapped up all projects! … Another reason to consider adding one-day services if you don’t already.
After managing your calendar and wrapping up current projects you can also set up your vacation email response in advance. Google Workspace allows you to set the dates for your specific vacation message months ahead of time. This is a handy tool for us small business owners who do a lot of the scheduling ourselves.
Finally, depending on your workload you may want to consider hiring extra help. You may need to reach out to a VA for some temporary help managing emails and bookings. Or you can look into another business owner within your lane to help complete projects. Yes, you will have to pay this person, but it may be worth it so that you cab truly enjoy your vacation time.
Once you have gone through your pre-vacation to-do list, GRAB YOURSELF A DRINK! Or do whatever you do to say “Woohoo! It’s vacay time!” Just me that celebrates this kind of thing? Okay, cool.
Whatever vacation you are planning, I hope it is everything you’ve been dreaming of. Send me a message and let me know your vacation plans (so I can start planning my next one!)
